Electronic Ink (E Ink) also known as Electrophoretic Ink is a proprietary electronic paper manufactured by E Ink Corporation. The E Ink that is used with Amazon Kindle Touch is the second generation and is referred as Pearl. This E Ink Pearl was first announced on July 31, 2010 and Kindle DX was the first device to incorporate Pearl display. It became popular with other e-readers as well including Sony Readers and Nook.

The first and the second generation of E Ink are only available in grayscale display. The latest generation of E Ink which is called Triton is available in color display. Though it is a color display the new Triton is said to be easy to read in bright-lid environment unlike LCD screens.

The new Triton comes in 16 shades of gray and 4096 colors of display. Hanvon is the first device to use Triton color display. E Ink is largely responsible for the success of popular eBook readers like kindle and Nook.
